Conduct Code

Previous Page Word Version PDF Version

Most groups find it important to agree to a code of conduct prior to departure. This will be particularly useful with youth groups. This sample was drawn from a code of conduct used by a group of parishes that worked together to travel to Belize. You may want to customize a code to your particular circumstances, but this sample will give you a good place to start.

Sample Code of Conduct

  • No drinking
  • No sex
  • Nothing illegal: in the US or host country
  • Show respect to everyone; treat others as you would want to be treated
  • Use good manners, be polite (and culturally sensitive)
  • Share all resources with others
  • Look out for each other
  • Respect everyone’s (including own) space
  • Always have a buddy
  • Only go into other hotel rooms if invited and if appropriate
  • Everyone treated as adult
  • Be on time
  • Don’t form exclusive groups, including toward hosts
  • Be open to differences, including beliefs and ways of life
  • Be respectful to the land
  • No whining, think before you speak
  • Stay positive
  • Always communicate feelings out loud so no one is confused
  • Identify leaders
  • Listen to everyone’s opinions and ideas
